Broadband may soon get cheaper in India.

NEW DELHI: Broadband access and usage may become more affordable as the government is likely to review duties levied on inputs and finished products used in providing broadband and internet services. Modems and routers used for internet and broadband may also become cheaper as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommended 100% depreciation in the first year.

On Wednesday, Indian telecom regulator issued recommendations on the national broadband plan aiming at inclusive growth, easy access to high speed data and increase broadband penetration in the country. The government has missed its target of 20 million broadband connections within this year, reaching only 10.3 million. As of September this year, broadband penetration was 0.8% against teledensity of 60.99%.

The objective of national broadband network is to provide optic fibre to homes in 63 cities covered under Jawahar Lal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM), and within half a km distance from homes in all other cities. Therefore, recommendations include an open access optical fibre network connecting all habitation with population of 500 and above, which will be set up in two phases.

The first phase covering all cities, urban areas and gram panchayats will be completed by the year 2012. Phase II will see the extension of the network to all the habitations having a population more than 500, to be completed by the year 2013.

The Indian government would spend around Rs 60,000 crore on setting up the broadband network as a loan to be financed by USO fund. A target of providing 75 million broadband connections has been kept by 2012 and 160 million broadband connections by the year 2014.

The optical fibre network would support huge bandwidth requirement for provision of broadband and facilitate broadband growth. TRAI feels this would increase GDP growth as the recommendations quote a study highlighting a 1.38% increase in the per capita GDP growth in developing economies with 10% increase in broadband penetration.

Google says 300,000 Android phones activated daily

More than 300,000 smartphones running on Google-backed Android software are activated daily, according to an engineering vice president at the Internet giant.

Andy Rubin fired off the update in a terse "tweet" at microblogging service Twitter late Wednesday.

The news indicates that Android smartphones are building momentum in the hot mobile market, where just a few months ago Google boasted that the rate of Android handset activations averaged 200,000 a day.

Google is fueling interest in Android devices with the release next week of a new champion on the mobile phone market battlefield, a "Nexus S" smartphone made by South Korea's Samsung.

The Nexus S, the successor to the Nexus One launched about a year earlier, will be the first smartphone on the market powered by the latest version of Android mobile software, "Gingerbread."

The Android mobile operating system surged past Apple's iPhone and Canada's BlackBerry in the third quarter to become the second biggest smartphone platform after Nokia's Symbian, research firm Gartner reported in November.

Gartner said Finland's Nokia sold 29.5 million smartphones during the third quarter of the year for a 36.6 percent share of the worldwide market, down from 44.6 percent a year ago.

Sales of Android-powered smartphones soared to 20.5 million units, giving the Android platform a 25.5 percent market share, up from just 3.5 percent a year ago, Gartner said.

Apple's iPhone was next on sales of 13.5 million units for a 16.7 percent market share, down from 17.1 percent a year ago.

Canada's Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry, was in fourth position with sales of 11.9 million units. Its market share dropped to 14.8 percent from 20.7 percent a year ago.

Microsoft's Windows Mobile saw sales of 2.2 million units giving it a 2.8 percent market share, down from 7.9 percent a year ago, Gartner said.

Xbox 360 leads rebound in US videogame sales: NPD

Sagging US videogame industry revenue rebounded in November as buyers snatched up gesture-sensing control gadgets for Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles, NPD Group reported Thursday.

"The Xbox 360 Kinect was the best-selling accessory item in November," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

"With one month of sales, it's the top-selling accessory item in terms of dollar sales on a year-to-date basis."

Overall sales of videogame hardware and software at stores in November tallied 2.99 billion, an eight percent increase from the same month last year.

The figure did not include used videogame sales, digital distribution of software or mobile applications.

Money taken in from sales of videogame accessories such as Kinect surged 69 percent to 413.3 million dollars, according to NPD.

Xbox 360 was the top selling console for the month and Xbox 360 accessories accounted for 60 percent of the revenue in the accessory category.

"The 360 platform accounted for over 40 percent of total industry sales driven by the successful launch of Microsoft's Kinect," Frazier said.

Microsoft reported that it had sold more than 2.5 million Kinect for Xbox 360 devices worldwide in the 25 days after the videogame controllers hit the market in early November.

Microsoft is on track to meet its forecast of selling five million Kinect gadgets by the end of the year, according to Don Mattrick, president of Interactive Entertainment Business at the US-based technology giant.

Kinect uses a 3D camera and motion recognition software to let people play videogames on Xbox 360 consoles using natural body movements and voice commands instead of hand-held controllers.

The standalone Kinect, which works with the 45 million Xbox 360s already sold worldwide, costs 150 dollars. A four-gigabyte Xbox 360 console that includes the Kinect and the "Kinect Adventures" game sells for 299 dollars.

The NPD report did not specify revenue for sales of Move motion-sensing controllers for Sony PlayStation 3 videogame consoles.

Nintendo's handheld DS game gadgets were the top selling systems overall in November, according to NPD.

Activision military shooter "Call of Duty: Black Ops" was the top selling title for the month, followed by Ubisoft videogames "Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" and "Just Dance 2."

Revenue climbed in every category, prompting NPD to estimate that the videogame industry could take in between 18.8 and 19.6 billion dollars in the United States this year.

Finishing at the high end of that range would result in revenue being about the same as it was in 2009.

"Gains in November offset a good portion of the year-to-date declines," Frazier said.
