No immediate plans to divest stake from MindTree: Soota

Outgoing Executive Chairman of MindTree Limited, Ashok Soota, today clarified that he had no "immediate" plans to divest his stake in the company but would do so over due course of time.

Soota who tendered his resignation, effective from March 31, 2011, said in a joint statement, "I have no immediate plans for the divestment of my stake in MindTree"

"I will, in due course of time, divest my stake in a manner which will not jeopardize MindTree. The proceeds of the divestment will be used towards funding my new NGO and the new business venture, which I will soon announce."

Krishnakumar Natarajan, CEO & MD, MindTree Limited, a global IT Solutions and Product Engineering Services company, said, "After the resignation of Ashok Soota from MindTree, there has been speculation on the sale of his stake in MindTree, his future plans and impact, if any, on MindTree."

"We are confident that if Soota enters into areas competing with MindTree and some MindTree employees were to join him, the start-up operation would have no material impact on MindTree's business.

MindTree has built strong capabilities and excellent customer relationships, which will take MindTree of greater heights," he said.

WWW2011: Focusing on internet's next billion users

Did you know that less than 10 percent of the Indian population uses the World Wide Web? Or that the next billion users of the internet will come from emerging markets like Brazil, China, India, Indonesia and Russia?

The future of the web will be under discussion at the 20th international World Wide Web Conference (WWW2011) here, a prestigious event that India, with one of the world's fastest growing population of internet users, will host for the first time. Beginning March 28, it will be attended by 800 delegates from 49 countries.

"The conference will debate the future of the Web, which is important for India," S. Sadagopan, director of the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Bangalore, told a news agency.

"It is more relevant for India, especially in the context of high mobile penetration among the younger generation, improving literacy levels, large young and English-speaking population."

IIIT, Bangalore, in cooperation with the IIIT, Hyderabad, and the Institute of Information Technology, Bombay (Mumbai), is hosting the event.

The five-day meet has the theme "web for all". It will debate technical challenges in overcoming the digital divide and ways to bring the web to underserved populations. The event will be addressed by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the WWW Conference director and inventor of the web. It will also have research papers that can shape the web of tomorrow.

Ex-Apple exec rolls out cellphone social network

Bill Nguyen , the serial entrepreneur who sold his last company to Apple Inc in 2009, is launching a new cellphone-based social network which aims to challenge Facebook's dominance in social communications beyond the personal computer.

Color is a free smartphone-based application on iPhones and Android devices which lets people in close proximity capture and share their photos, videos and text simultaneously to multiple phones in real time.

With photos and video-sharing being one of the most popular activities on Facebook , Color's founders hope the always-on mobile nature of Color will create a different kind of 'post-PC' social network. Nguyen said social networks and apps were moving users away for PC-based Web many users were initially familiar with.

"This transition to post-PC world is going to be a huge fundamental shift," said Nguyen. "We're sharing more and more information in real-time."

Nguyen, who sold online music start-up Lala to Apple for a reported $80 million, worked with the iPhone maker for just under a year.

Intel launches second generation processor - Intel Insider

Intel today launched a second generation processor called Intel Insider, a feature that will help people download and view movies in High Definition (HD) on their laptops and PCs.

The PCs and Laptops with the Intel Insider processor would be available in the country from next month onwards, Intel's Managing Director, South Asia, R Shivakumar told PTI here.

"The launch of Intel Insider in India is absolutely befitting considering it is the home of one of the largest film industries in the world -- Bollywood. With Intel Insider, people can watch their favourite movies in HD at their homes on the day of release itself," Shivakumar said.

In a bid to boost its sales, Intel has tied-up with Hungama.com, which will act as a platform for download and streaming of famous Bollywood and international movies, including blockbusters from Yash Raj Films , Paramount Pictures , T-Series and Reliance Home Video .

The introduction of Intel Insider is a significant breakthrough in the entertainment space where consumers can unlock an ever increasing and expanding world of high- definition content on their PCs, he added.

The technology also offers a "proactive queue" capability that will help consumers pre-download films ahead of the release date, and give them the ability to purchase those films, securely, even if they are not connected to the Internet.

This will allow consumers to start watching their movies immediately on the release date without waiting to download during peak traffic times.

Yahoo revamps web search

Yahoo Inc has revamped its Internet search service to sense queries and showcase answers from movie listings to weather forecasts, even as users are typing in a word.

The upgrade comes as Yahoo tries to regain market share in Web search and counter new features on Google Inc's website.

"People are looking for answers; they're not looking for links," Yahoo executive Shashi Seth told reporters in San Francisco while demonstrating the new service on Wednesday.

The service, dubbed Search Direct, displays answers to queries in a pop-up box which change in real-time as a user continues typing in a search term. Google Instant, launched last year, predicts a search term after only a few words are typed, and immediately serves up relevant results.

Yahoo is talking to advertisers about new kinds of graphically rich ad formats and video ads that could appear inside the Search Direct box, said Seth, who is senior vice president of Yahoo Search and Marketplaces.

"Over the course of the next couple of months you're probably going to see some of these ideas at play," he said of the new ad formats.
