Apple's iPad helps Israeli's hospitals treat patients

In Israel's hospitals Apple's iPad to enable medical staff to help treat patients, provide consultations and study X-rays and CT scans from afar.
The Mayanei Hayeshua Medical Center, located in the largely ultra-orthodox Tel Aviv suburb Bnei Brak, said on Tuesday it is the first hospital to program the high-resolution, touch-screen iPad to interact with Microsoft Corp's Chameleon software used by hopsitals.
The hospital's computer department programed the iPad with the help of an external technology company.
"We now have the same program and the same database for treatment in the hospital on the iPad," Dr Yoram Liwer, chief executive of Mayanei Hayeshua, told Reuters. "The patients' data are in the computer ... so physicians who are out of hospital but on call can see X-rays and ultrasounds through their iPad and give more intelligent advice to staff in the hospital."
For example, a patient recently arrived in the emergency room with a broken hip and ultimately needed a full hip replacement.
The doctor on duty consulted with a senior orthopeadic surgeon who was not in the hospital and who offered advice on the treatment after studying the X-rays and CT scans. The senior doctor was also able to follow up immediately after the surgery to see the results.
"The high resolution of the screens enables good viewing of the X-rays and also the iPad is fun to work with," Liwer said. "People like to carry it with them wherever they go. They don't take a laptop but the iPad is with them all the time so we get better and more intelligent consulting."

Motorola Tablet with Android 3.0 at CES 2011

Motorola has created a video teaser called the "Tablet Evolution". The ad is preparing for the unveiling of the Motorola Android 3.0 tablet and explains that it will be revealed at CES 2011.

The video starts by showing various tablets from thousands of years ago and says they are too heavy to carry around and have low res screens. Moving on a few thousand years to now, the iPad is next in line that is described as a giant iPhone... a couple of times.

After that it takes a jab at the Galaxy Tab and says... it's running Android OS... but Android OS for a phone.

Nothing is unveiled although we have seen a mysterious Honeycomb tablet from Motorola a few days ago. If you are thinking of getting a tablet device and don't want the iPad, then it might be worth you waiting for CES 2011 as a number of new devices are launching next year. Many of those we expect to see at CES 2011.

How-to Watch Lunar Eclipse Live Online!

It’s eclipse time again! For all you astronomy enthusiasts out there (especially in the U.S.A), this first Total LunarEclipse in two years is nothing short of a splendid holiday gift from the Heavens above.

So you want to know if and how long the eclipse would be visible from where you live?

There’s a quick word from NASA astronomers on the viewing times around the world:

“Early in the morning on Dec. 21, a total lunar eclipse will be visible to sky watchers around the world. The eclipse is visible across all of North America — for viewers in western states, the eclipse actually begins late in the evening of Dec. 20.

Viewers in Greenland, Iceland and western Europe will be able to see the beginning stages of the eclipse before moonset. In western Asia, the later stages of the eclipse will be visible after moonrise. All of the eclipse will be visible throughout Mexico and Central America and northwest South America.

Viewers in Peru, Chile and Bolivia will see most of the eclipse, but the moon will set before the end of the Penumbral phase. Viewers in Brazil will see the moon set during totality. Parts of Africa in the northwest will also see the moon set while it is eclipsed. All but the westernmost tip of Australia will see an eclipsed moon as it rises. Unfortunately most of Africa, the middle East and India will not have a view of this event.”

Here’s also a nice map from NASA that would determine if viewing is possible in your area:

So great news for the folks in the United States, all of the eclipse will be visible over the early hours of 21st December or very late at night on the 20th, depending on the time zone.

Don’t hesitate to stay up outdoors all night sky-gazing. You can watch this beautiful astronomical phenomenon directly with the naked-eye.

For all you other people who live outside of the US, or are unable to see the complete eclipse, do not despair. Live streaming of the phenomenon is being made available from NASA through the The NASA Marshall Moon Cam.

Live streaming has begun as of now, but they appear to have cloudy skies so not much is visible at the moment. Keep watching as the actual eclipse starts in about an hour or so. Things might clear up by then.

NASA has been kind enough to list a few other web cam options for viewing the eclipse. The view might be different from different streams, owing to changes in weather conditions and the location of the web cam.

There’s also a live web chat organized by NASA to answer questions about the eclipse. Astronomer Mitzi Adams answers questions from 12:00 midnight all the way through 5:00 AM EST.

Google's UK Street View wi-fi data 'deleted'

Personal data collected by Google's UK Street View cars has been deleted. The UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), which has been criticised for not taking a more hardline stance against Google, confirmed the deletion.

The first batch of wi-fi data, which included snippets of e-mails, URLs and passwords, was deleted in November. But legal wrangles in other countries meant that the remaining data, all of which the firm said was collected in error, took more time to erase."We can confirm that the UK data has now been deleted, and that this has been independently certified," said Google.

The deletion was carried out by US forensics firm Stroz Friedberg. The ICO welcomed the announcement and said that it had been sent a copy of the report confirming the deletion.

"This is inline with the requirements of the undertaking issued by the ICO and signed by Google last month," said a spokesperson. The ICO has come under fire for not taking action against the firm, which first admitted to collecting information from unsecured wireless networks in more than 30 countries in May 2010.

But deputy information commissioner David Smith told the BBC in November that it had no grounds for fining Google. He also admitted that the the UK had conducted a much more basic investigation than other countries, such as Canada, which concluded that the search giant "seriously violated" its privacy laws.

"We spent less time searching than others did. If we had searched for days and days we would have found more," Mr Smith said at the time.A spokesperson said that the ICO would not change any of its procedures, despite the condemnation.

'Data disturbance'
A Freedom of Information request submitted to the ICO, and published on 17 December, details the correspondence between the firm and the watchdog. It also explains why, despite the bulk of the data being deleted by 26 November, it has taken until now to delete the rest.

"There is some data from the UK which we haven't been able to delete yet," wrote Google's global privacy counsel Peter Fleischer in November, describing the obstacle as a "wrinkle to the process"."This relates to data that was still on Street View car disks at the time we discovered our mistake in May. Because these disks could contain data from countries where we have received preservation requests from the authorities, we must make sure that in deleting the UK data we don't disturb the surrounding data.

"In the meantime, the data on these disks was never uploaded to our servers, and these disks have been and will remain securely stored as we work to complete the task."The firm has faced a series of global investigations into how it came to collect the data, some of which are ongoing.

Last week Google told Connecticut's attorney general's office, which is leading a multi-state US probe, that it would not comply with requests to hand over the data it collected."I am disappointed by Google's failure to comply with my information demands," Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said in a statement.

"We will review any information we receive and consider whether additional enforcement steps - including possible legal action - are warranted."

Your iPhone could be spying on you

Do you know that dozens of popular iPhone applications could be secretly spying on what you do with them.

More than half of the programs and games for smartphones sent data back to the private company once they had been downloaded, a study has found.

It found that of the 101 applications tested, 56 transmitted the phone's individual number to a private company in some way, known as the Unique Device Identifier or UDID.

Some 47 sent the phone's location and five sent age, gender and other personal information, a newspaper reported.

The applications include the wildly popular Angry Birds game and music identifying software Shazam, which comes pre-installed on every iPhone.

More data was sent back about a user's location on the Apple's iPhone than Google's Android smartphone, the research discovered, even though both companies have promised not to let such practices take place.

Armed with this information, firms, including Google, track the individuals' movements and sell personalised ad for which they can make more money than regular ones.

The research was carried out in the US but it would apply to users downloading applications from anywhere in the world.

Michael Becker of the US-based Mobile Marketing Association said the advantage of mobile phones for advertisers is that they are always with us.

"It's always on," he said. "In the world of mobile, there is no anonymity," he said.

The research by the Wall Street Journal found that smartphone users had no way of stopping the tracking, unlike on a computer where you can disable the monitoring software, known as 'cookies'.

Typical of the problem was Angry Birds which sent the phone's UDID to the game's makers Electronic Arts.

Pandora, the popular music application, sent gender, location, age and the phone ID to a string of advertising networks.

Android and iPhone versions of a game called Paper Toss, where players try to throw paper wads into a bin, each sent the phone's ID number to at least five ad companies.

Applications became wildly popular with the advent of smartphones and when Apple opened its App store in 2008. Now more than 300,000 are available.

Google shuts voice search in India

Google’s closure of its voice search experiment in India, puts a question mark on the viability of search through automated voice responses. “The experiment was wound up as we did not achieve scale and viability,” said Vinay Goel, Google’s India products head. “This experiment helped us learn more about user needs and build core technologies.”

Analysts say that its cheaper to put a person behind a call in India than a machine. VC firm Canaan Partners India MD Alok Mittal says that it costs about Rs 2-3 per minute to have an agent answer a call. “A sales lead through local search can get you Rs 40-50, which far outweighs the cost of an agent.”

Google’s experiment was started in 2008 across Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore. Users could call at 1-800-4199-9999 and ask for an item to be searched through the interactive voice response system. One could ask for ‘Paradise biryani’ in Hyderabad and the system would guide you the top options, which are then SMSed.

The charge to the caller was free. However, a delay in reponse time and poor understanding of the search request, might have led to the failure of the business.

While Google was struggling with its voice search experiment, business for India’s local search sites have seen a spurt over the last two years. While niche search websites have cropped up, they provide text search listing. Voice response has still not caught on in the search business, yet.

“We never wanted to be in the call centre hiring kind of model,” Goel of Google said, explaining the shutdown.

10 reasons why Windows Phone 7 has its work cut out

The mobile smartphone race is on. Apple, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG, HTC and Blackberry are all on top of the game. However, Microsoft is a little late to the party. Windows Phone 7 has launched globally, but there’s just a trickle of devices coming in to India. These are ten factors to prove that Microsoft has a tough task ahead for its newest mobile operating system.

1. Competition from the existing app stores:

Microsoft’s existing app store is woefully inadequate compared to Apple’s App Store or even the Android Market for that matter. No matter how great the hardware or how slick the operating system looks, it’s finally the applications that drive the user towards a certain platform. Apple is currently king of the app stores with over 5 billion downloads, over 300,000 apps and thousands of new additions each month. Android is fast catching up with over 1 billion downloads, 120,000 total apps and thousands of new additions each month.

2. Vendor support:

Just like Windows for a PC, Microsoft is going to charge OEM manufacturers a license fee to be able to use Windows Phone 7 on their devices. Meanwhile, Android, Symbian 3, Bada and Meego are all open source operating systems. Furthermore, OEM manufacturers will not have access to the Windows Phone 7 code, which means they will not be able to make their own customisations to the software. Currently, big players like HTC and Motorola rely heavily on OS customisation to differentiate their products.

3. Bad Press:

Before Windows Phone 7 devices flood the market, it is getting really bad press. Research firm Gartner ranks Windows Phone behind Symbian, Android, iPhone, Blackberry and the Linux-based MeeGo in its 2014 OS ranking forecast. Reviews are calling it “inferior to Android, iPhone and even Samsung’s Bada” (from CIO Magazine). Infoworld.com published one of the more scathing reviews of Windows Phone 7. “Windows Phone 7 is a waste of time and money. It's a platform that no carrier, device maker, developer, or user should bother with. Microsoft should kill it before it ships and admit that it's out of the mobile game for good.”

4. Dropped features:

Microsoft seems to treating Windows Phone 7 as a completely new operating system, because features like tethering (using the phone’s data connection on a PC) have been dropped. It does not do multitasking, there is no backwards support for apps and the copypaste function is limited. If it has to compete with iPhone and Android, it needs to go one-up , not two-down !

5. Xbox Live integration:

Windows Phone 7 has Xbox Live integration. This doesn’t mean that you can play Xbox games on it, but rather that your avatar and gamerscore from your Xbox console is also available on the phone. Games still have to be made specifically for the smaller screen and particular hardware of a handheld device.

6. Microsoft’s track record:

Microsoft’s track record with mobile phones has been less than stellar. Older devices powered by Windows Mobile 6 and 6.5 were often described as boring. More recently, the Microsoft KIN was announced to the world and just as quickly, was abandoned.
