Motorola to acquire IPTV software provider Dreampark

Motorola Mobility Inc on Wednesday said it will acquire Dreampark , an IPTV software provider for an undisclosed amount.

"We have signed a definitive agreement to acquire Dreampark, a leading IPTV software provider based in Sweden," Motorola Mobility said in a statement.

However, the company has not disclosed the financial terms of the deal.

"This transaction enables us to continue to enhance our Medios software portfolio and capitalise upon the convergence of wireless technology , media, mobile computing and the Internet," said John Burke, senior vice-president and general manager of Motorola Mobility's Converged Experiences business.

Motorola Mobility, the mobile phone division of global telecom giant Motorola, which was hived off from the rest of the company in January, said that the acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter of 2011.

Motorola's mobile unit includes handsets and set-top boxes that will continue to do business under the name Motorola Mobility, while the remaining Motorola changes its name to Motorola Solutions.

It will sell police radios and barcode scanners to government and business customers.

Earlier in December, Motorola Mobility announced it will acquire Zecter Inc, a start-up firm offering products for cloud-based storage and streaming of digital media to Internet-enabled devices.

New device to detect LPG gas leaks

With incidents of LPG cylinder leak on the rise, a resident of Bhubaneswar has come up with a device that can detect gas leakage and set off a warning alarm by sending text messages to a cell phone.

Developed by Gautam Kumar, the device, named 'Suraksha', has sensors which detects the typical smell of LPG and can be configured to enable a maximum of five people to receive the alert. The message is accompanied with the alarm.

Honours and accolades have started coming in for Gautam following the innovation. Only yesterday, he was given an award at the EMTech India awards function in Bangalore.

He was also named the Social Innovator of the year by the 112-year old technology publication 'Technology Review' from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, in its India edition.

Technology Review India in its forthcoming issue said, "The team at (Gautam's) Roboticwares had initially developed a leakage sensor with a buzzer alarm. Then they realised that a buzzer alarm is of no use in an empty house."

Mobile phones, PCs to become cheaper

Import of mobile phones, computer printers and coking coal will become cheaper. Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday reduced the counter veiling duty (CVD) on import of mobile phones to 1% from 5%.

Earlier, 1% CVD was allowed on import of mobile phones only when cenvat credit was not claimed. Now, this condition has been removed. Mukherjee also extended the concessional rate of 5% CVD and nil special additional duty (SAD) on import of parts of all computer printers by actual users.

FM extended retail sale price based assessment with an abatement of 35% to many of the items so that disputes regarding valuation are avoided. He also exempted any waste, scrap or parings arising in course of manufacturing of these items as a measure of relief.

He also exempted seven specified parts of personal computers from SAD. This will lead to lowering of prices of computers in the country. In order to help the iron and steel industry, FM gave duty exemption to certain types of coking coal imported for iron or steel manufacturing.

He also restored excise duty (and CVD) exemption on silicon wafers imported for making solar cells/modules. In an attempt to provide better tax regime to manufacturers, Mukherjee proposed that physical verification of their premises would not be necessary for new registrants; visits to such units by central excise officers would be permitted only with due authorisation as in case of SSI units; they would be required to file only quarterly returns; and a simplified return format will be prescribed.

Now, an iPhone app to delete drunken message on Facebook!

Drunken texting may soon become a thing of the past. Thanks to a new iPhone application , you can now delete embarrassing messages posted on social network sites like 'Facebook' and 'Twitter' with the tap of a button.

The less-than two-pounds tool, called 'Last Night Never Happened', automatically deletes all embarrassing social network mesages over a set period by its user who posted them in a drunken state, 'The Sun' reported.

In fact, it has been designed to save boozers the humiliation of trawling through status updates, tweets, photos, comments and messages uploaded while half-cut.

Using the app is easy -- a user simply enters the time they started boozing, and it quickly deletes all posts from their Facebook and Twitter accounts since that time, say its developers.

Developed by 22Seeds, it can be downloaded from Apple's App Store.

On their website 'lastnightapp.com', the deveopers say, "We all get carried away sometimes and end up posting embarrassing tweets and photos of ourselves and our friends, forgetting that all of our Facebook and Twitter contacts can see them, family and potential employers included.

"Last Night Never Happened is the life-saving app that will help you avoid letting those posts spread on the internet and save you a lot of embarrassment."

Apple CEO Steve Jobs to be deposed

Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs , who is currently out on medical leave, will be deposed to testify in an antitrust suit related to its iPod music players and iTunes store.

In a Monday filing in the U.S. district court for the Northern District of California in San Jose, Magistrate Judge Howard R. Lloyd ordered Jobs could answer questions for two hours about RealNetworks Inc.'s Harmony technology. This technology was rolled out in 2004 and briefly allowed songs sold by RealNetworks' online music store to be played on iPods, despite Apple's use at the time of encryption technology to prevent this. Apple issued an iPod and iTunes software update shortly thereafter that disabled this interoperability.

The court found that "Jobs has unique, non-repetitive, firsthand knowledge" about the issue, the judge said.

The order stems from a 2005 class action suit led filed against Apple, led by Thomas Slattery, alleging Apple's use of FairPlay encryption technology gave it a monopoly on the digital player and audio download markets.

Before 2009, Apple used FairPlay on songs bought from its iTunes music store to stop users from making unauthorized copies of tracks. FairPlay limited the playing of these songs to iPods, which meant users with other types of digital music players could not play them, and made it so that other digital music purchases with their own copy-preventing encryption couldn't be played on an iPod. Users have always been able to copy their own songs from CDs into iTunes and move that music onto their iPods.

New iPad app lets parents read stories to their kids, even if at work

For parents too busy to read bedtime stories to their kids, here's the perfect solution to their problem.

The latest iPhone and iPad app can actually read your child a story - and even sing them a lullaby - even if you are busy at work, reports the Daily Mail.

The Nursery Rhymes app with Storytime, which costs 2.39 pounds, is marketed as a tool parents can use to ensure they never miss bedtime again, no matter where they are.

Parents can use the microphone to speak to their child, while the touchscreen on the gadgets can also be used to make the pages move.

Currently, Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill and Three Blind Mice have been converted into the new format.

However, the application has been criticized from online groups who believe it could lead to a lack of bonding with children.

Oracle to stop writing software for Itanium processor

Oracle Corp said late on Tuesday it has decided to discontinue all software development on the Intel Itanium microprocessor after multiple conversations with Intel senior management.

Oracle said Intel management made it clear that their strategic focus is on their x86 microprocessor and that Itanium was nearing the end of its life.

Both Microsoft and Red Hat Inc have already stopped developing software for Itanium, Oracle said.

The company, however, said it will continue to provide customers with support for existing versions of Oracle software products that already run on Itanium.

4G service to speed up British mobile internet by 16 times

Mobile phone networks in Britain will be able to provide internet speeds up to 16 times faster than current technologies after Ofcom unveiled plans for 4G coverage.

Ofcam, the independent telecom regulator in Britain, has announced an auction for the right to provide high-speed services to consumers and businesses in a sale that could raise more than 10 billion pounds for the treasury.

It is envisaged that four companies would buy the right to offer 4G services -- already available in the US -- from 2013.

Typically, they should offer speeds of 4 to 8 megabits per second (Mbps), compared with the 0.5 to 2 Mbps of most existing 3G services which currently connect high-tech handsets such as the iPhone to mobile masts and the web.

The speedier system will allow people to smoothly stream high-definition TV and films on their smartphones , laptops and tablets on the go, the Daily Mail reports.

US judge rejects Google books settlement

A federal judge has rejected a deal between Google and lawyers for authors and publishers to let the gigantic search engine make money presiding over the world's largest digital library .

US Circuit Judge Denny Chin said the creation of a universal library would benefit many but would ``simply go too far.''

He said the settlement of the class-action lawsuit challenging the right of Google to scan books and display snippets for online searching would ``grant Google significant rights to exploit entire books, without permission of the copyright owners.''

Chin said the deal gives Goggle ``a significant advantage over competitors.'' He said it would be ``rewarding it for engaging in wholesale copying of copyrighted works without permission, while releasing claims well beyond those presented in the case.''

New app to delete drunken messages on Facebook, Twitter

iPhone has developed a new application using which one could delete messages on Facebok and Twitter that were put out when one was in a drunk state.

The new iPhone application - called "Last Night Never Happened" - that can be bought for 1.19 pounds, deletes all "embarrassing" social network activity, including status updates, tweets, photos and comments, over a set period, The Sun reported.

Using the application is very easy. A user simply has to enter the time he or she started drinking, and all posts from their Facebook and Twitter accounts would be deleted since that time.

Programmer Daniel Cowen, who developed the application, said: "We all get carried away sometimes and end up posting embarrassing tweets and photos of ourselves and our friends, forgetting that all of our Facebook and Twitter contacts can see them, family and potential employers included."

"Last Night Never Happened" is the life-saving app that will help you avoid letting those posts spread on the internet and save you a lot of embarrassment."

Google tops 'most desirable employers' list

Google ranks number one on list of ideal employers, according to a survey released by consulting firm Universum.

Nearly 25 per cent of survey respondents picked Google Inc. -- almost twice as many as chose Apple Inc., which ranked second. Walt Disney Co., the US State Department and Amazon.com Inc. rounded out the top five.

Government agencies such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency, also ranked in the top 10.

Universum asked 10,306 young professionals -- defined as college graduates with one to eight years of work experience -- to pick as many as five ideal employers out of a list of 150.

Respondents also could write in companies not on the list. The top write-in was Facebook, followed by the Department of Homeland Security and the United Nations.
